The device actually has RS232, I2C, SPI, and 8 general purpose I/O (GPIO) pins. The earlier revisions of the Raspberry Pi were 26-pin based while the newer models are 40-pin. By design it has no predefined purpose and can be used by the hardware or software developer to perform the functions they choose. I am trying to make an AC dimmer and need zero cross detection using GPIO in C, I am using beagleboard. The example here converts analog values into a digital signal that can be read using a Raspberry Pi input connection.
